Gentiva/Kindred Not About Patient First
Atlanta Billing Director stated in front of 3 staff members. "I do not care if there is a consent form or not" I will bill the patient and outstanding funds and send to collections to get Gentiva's money." "Most of the time a patient does not remember if we told them they would owe any money or not" It is Gentiva's money and who cares about what the patient says!
This is a true statement and I was appalled. Do not admit your loved ones to this type of situation.
They do not care about your loved ones! I KNOW FIRST HAND!
Misrepresentation
The Genitiva "team" of employees who visited my dad in the hospital were very misleading. One of the many half truths that I was told is that the transportation from the hospital to their facility would be covered by medicare 100%.
I have received a bill from the ambulance and the response that i received from Gentiva is " I keep telling them not to tell people that". My dad is now paying for this bill. They have a used car sales approach. My dad was also heavily sedated for "pain" that he did not have.
I removed him from their facility the same day and transferred him to Hope Hospice. I am an RN and I was very pleased with Hope Hospice.

A Highly Unethical Organization
I worked for Gentiva/Kindred Healthcare for 3 months as a marketing representative.
I was hired by an Area Manager who appeared very professional but one month later a new Sales Manager was hired for my division.
This new Sales Manager was verbally abusive and discriminatory which I reported to the Area Manager.
After bringing this abuse to managements attention...I was promptly dismissed.
My short career at Gentiva Hispice was extremely negative and very disappointing.
The moral compass of a company starts at the top and unfortunately Gentiva is not an organization with high standards.
Sadly, this lack of ethics is passed down to employees who are tasked with taking care of hospice patients.
For that reason; I would not recommend utilizing Gentiva or Kindred Healthcare to take care of a loved one.

Verified Reviewer | Houston, TexasFailure to ensure properly functioning oxygen equipment causes death: DUH!
On Sept. 12 of 2015 I hired Gentiva (now Kindred I believe) Hospice out of Conroe, TX to provide at home services to my dad who was returning home from the hospital following pneumonia.
He only qualified for hospice services based on a diagnosis of Parkinson's. We decided to go with hospice care because I stupidly thought we would get more nursing support going home with oxygen. I badgered these people about making sure we had working equipment as well as nurses to train homecare staff and family in use of O2 equip. My dad died within two hours of returning home while *** Gentiva nurse sat at his kitchen table doing paperwork and never checking his machine for proper functioning.
It was not working. My dad was a career pilot, a jet fighter pilot in the Air Force for 25 years before going into the private sector. He was a supremely skilled pilot who was not afraid of anything about a plane. Only of loosing oxygen at altitude.
He had dreams of the oxygen failure the week prior to his death. GENTIVA HOSPICE FAILURE TO PROVIDE DUE DILIGENCE IN PATIENT CARE CAUSED HIS DEATH. The humidifier bottle was mis-threaded on to the oxygen equipment when he arrived home and the so called nurse never once checked it and ignored O2 sats in the 80s.
I fought very hard to get them to review all records which I have showing their negligence and they deny any responsibility because they can. Tort reform in Texas makes it impossible to get legal representation even though I have been assured there is obvious liability.

Preferred solution: I want what I have been promised from this company and that is a face to face conversation with clinical administration staff to review records and answer my questions and, DEAR GOD, put a simple procedure in place so this never has to happen again.
Gentiva Customer Care Review
Gentiva - Sanitary Conditions Review from Dallas, North Carolina
Some Gentiva home care employees at the Gastonia, North Carolina facility needs retraining on customer service / personal hygiene / and Sanitary Procedures. They don't wash there hands and when they do they use the kitchen sink.
Why not the bathroom sink where you can wash off the germs and not contaminate the food area ??
When they take blood from a patient they leave needles/ bloody gause and other Bio-Hazards on the kitchen table or your other tables and leave, what's this for the word of Sanitary and intelligence. ??
Don't sign LOVED ones up for Gentiva Hospice Athens Georgia!
My precious mother has been a heart patient with amazing fight and zeal and has had amazing care for 40 years from cardiologists, family and family Doctors and nurses. Under the advice of a Gentiva Sales person whom we knew from another place, I signed my mom up with Gentiva Hospice.
They promised her cardiologist would be the "attending physician." That NEVER happened. They said the earlier you signed up people the better they do and it wasn't like it use to be (just death care). That is not true. Then they sent a VERY inexperienced nurse to our home who never answered ONE question.
He always had to call someone. He brought doctors orders ONLY from their staff doctors who never met or examined mom, and NOT ONCE consulted our cardiologist. More than once, we had unwelcome "staff" who showed up, did nothing but say hello and have me sign their pad so they could bill. It's ALL about the money - not medical care.
When mom got high fluid build up, we took her to the ER as we had before for extra lasix and a catheter to drain it. All went well in the ER, then they put her in the GENITIVA HOSPICE wing of the hospital. There they took her off all 18 of her medicines and started pumping her full of morphine (even though she had no pain) and atavan to "make her comfortable." That's ALL they do. Since her diuretics and all heart medicine were discontinued all at once, she died a fast and awful death in 3 days - drowning in her own heart fluid while I held her and tried to get help.
Friends and family were stunned at her sudden death. Had I known this is how Gentiva Hospice operates, I would NEVER have signed her up for this horrible company and this hospital death ward. I immediately cancelled this service for my still living but sick father and got him a new primary care doctor and home health visits. I pray whomever is reading this will NOT make the same mistakes.
I can't get mom back. Get your loved ones real medical care. Do they get money or some kind of points for the number of people that die in their care - or on this wing?
I wonder.
New experience hopefully
I had a previous bad experience with Gentiva Sandy Springs over a year ago and did not want to use them. However, I was told that they were the only home health to accept my grandmother so I let them see my grandmother.
The nurse that came out was ok but I got a call from the new adminstrator, Krista I think, and she really nice and helpful. I fee like she really cares about patients.
She made sure my grandmother got supplies and even called the doctor to ask for physical therapy. Maybe with this new person things are better now.

Birmingham Hospice - Terrible
The Birmingham, AL Hospice branch is unprofessional and uncaring. They have their own prejudices and are very uncouth.
Do not expect them to communicate with the family on any issues. They appear to lack the training and/or experience to deal with patients with various illnesses and their family. A company this large is only concerned with the bottom line, i.e. increasing their revenue and not the proper care for their patients.
In my opinion smaller healthcare providers are better at providing that good one on one service.
With Gentiva you are only a number. My family and I regret choosing this company to provide service.

Gentiva Nurse Review
Gentiva Manager Review
No Communication, poor service
Gentiva was assigned by primary care as physical therapy provider for my parents. Seemed good at first left a lot of information concerning the therapy, then it all went in the hand basket.
Scheduling was a nightmare as my parents had other Dr. appointments and Gentiva was not flexible at all. Your choice is when they selected or not. It was clear from the beginning that the only concern was for medicare billing.
not my parents. Communication was impossible even after several attempts, customer feedback during treatment is not possible. Final notes by Gentiva contained falsifications.
Stay away from this company of you have any choice at all.

Gentiva is a failure
My father was dropped after a rough patch of 3 hospital visits in a short time. This ended up to be to his benefit because we went with another company and he is doing great!
They dropped him because those 3 hospital stays means to their data that they aren't doing well; truth hurts! Had they stuck with him their data would look fabulous! But nope they made a family suffer and an old man feel like he wasn't worth working with. I begged them to continue working with him, no!
They practically had him in a grave and his family feeling dreadful. Shameful!
Terrible Experience w/Gentiva Stockbridge Location
The Stockbridge location has so many internal problems they can not possibly offer their clients anything beneficial. Very inconsistent with their client care, they do not return phone calls, they do not follow up with their clients, and they don't show up for all scheduled visits.
The employees that have worked there for several years, no longer care about what they do and the other ones have only been there a few weeks and have no working knowledge of the company. We've had more than one employee lie to our family about issues. We had one "nurse" show up w/o calling first and attempted to medicate my Father for no apparent reason. When I confronted her regarding her sketchy behavior, she begged me not to call the office about her actions.
She would not leave me alone until I assured her I wouldn't call! Of course I called and was told that person would never work in the area again because I wasn't the only person concerned about her behavior.
Well, she showed up at our house less than 2 weeks later! There are so many other Hospice companies in the area, do yourself and your loved one a favor, choose any other company but Gentiva.
Gentiva Hospice out of Carroll, Iowa
Stroke victim was suspected of wanting to commit suicide after pulling loose his PEG-tube feeding. Gentiva was called to place him into hospice and were told they had to ask the patient for permission.
They did and pt. indicated he wanted to live. Patient's significant other was a witness.
17 days later Gentiva was called a second time and with no family/friends as witnesses they placed him into hospice, discontinued his skilled nursing care/stroke rehabilitation without asking the patient nor informing the significant other of his change in status to "unskilled nursing care" which automatically cancelled all stroke therapy/rehabilitation. Patient died 13 days later after receiving only palliative medications (sedatives) and two days of opiates on a non-terminal patient.
